We Are Called to Walk by Faith

It is easy to place our trust in what we can see, in what we can prove. But how can we trust in what is invisible, in what cannot be proven? This, we hear today, is where faith comes in. The author of Wisdom reminds us that because the Chosen People had faith in God’s promises, they trusted that the sign of the blood of the lamb on the night of Passover would lead them out of captivity. The author of Hebrews notes that Abraham’s faith led Sarah and him to leave their homeland for an unknown country, where their descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky, despite their inability to have even one child. In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples to believe in things they cannot see, like the kingdom of God, and in things they cannot know, like the time when the master will return from the wedding. Just last week we heard the parable of the rich man with the bountiful harvest. The rich man put his faith only in things he could see: his land, the excess grain, larger barns. Remember where that got him? Better to have faith in our “inexhaustible treasure in heaven” (Luke 12:33).

Es fácil depositar nuestra confianza en lo que podemos ver, en lo que podemos probar. Pero, ¿cómo podemos confiar en lo que es invisible, en lo que no se puede comprobar? Aquí, escuchamos hoy, es donde entra la fe. El autor de Sabiduría nos recuerda que debido a que el Pueblo Elegido tenía fe en las promesas de Dios, confiaron en que la señal de la sangre del cordero en la noche de la Pascua los sacaría de cautiverio. El autor de Hebreos señala que la fe de Abraham llevó a Sarah y a él a abandonar su tierra natal hacia un país desconocido, donde sus descendientes serían tan numerosos como las estrellas en el cielo, a pesar de su incapacidad para tener un solo hijo. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús les pide a sus discípulos que crean en cosas que no pueden ver, como el reino de Dios, y en cosas que no pueden saber, como el momento en que el maestro regresará de la boda. La semana pasada escuchamos la parábola del hombre rico con la abundante cosecha. El rico puso su fe solo en lo que podía ver: su tierra, el exceso de grano, graneros más grandes. ¿Recuerdas a dónde lo llevó eso? Es mejor tener fe en nuestro “tesoro inagotable en el cielo” (Lucas 12:33).
