I am Going to the Father

In John’s Gospel, after Jesus celebrates the Passover meal with his disciples, he prepares them for what lies ahead. He knows that he will be crucified and die, but then be raised to be with the Father. He wants to assure them that they too will be raised to everlasting life, but he knows they cannot yet understand this. Thomas and Philip confirm this by their questions. Jesus answers that he is the way and that the Father is in him. He has already told them that they each need to carry their crosses. He himself will literally be doing this the next day. The way is difficult and entails suffering. But there are places for everyone with the Father at the destination. The early Church took this to heart, finding places for everyone. At first, the Hellenists—Greek-speaking members—were neglected when the Hebrew-speaking widows were given food. Therefore, the Twelve appointed seven Greek-speaking disciples to serve at table and ensure that every member was fed. In so doing, they guide us all on the way to the Father: make sacrifices, serve each other, and leave no one in need. To use Peter’s words, we are the “living stones” whom God builds into a spiritual house.

Yo Me Voy Al Padre

En el Evangelio de Juan, después de que Jesús celebra la cena de la Pascua con sus discípulos, los prepara para lo que les espera. Él sabe que será crucificado y morirá, pero que luego resucitará para estar con el Padre. Quiere asegurarles que ellos también resucitarán para la vida eterna, pero sabe que aún no pueden comprender esto. Tomás y Felipe lo confirman con sus preguntas. Jesús responde que Él es el camino y que el Padre está en Él. Ya les ha dicho que cada uno debe cargar con su propia cruz. Él mismo hará esto, literalmente, al día siguiente. El camino es difícil y conlleva sufrimiento. Pero hay un lugar para todos junto al Padre en el destino final. La Iglesia primitiva tomó esto muy a pecho, haciendo lugar para todos. Al principio, los helenistas—miembros de habla griega—fueron desatendidos cuando se distribuían alimentos a las viudas de habla hebrea. Por ello, los Doce designaron a siete discípulos de habla griega para servir a la mesa y asegurar que cada miembro recibiera alimento. Al hacerlo, nos guían a todos en el camino hacia el Padre: hacer sacrificios, servirnos unos a otros y no dejar a nadie en la necesidad. Para usar las palabras de Pedro, somos las “piedras vivas” con las que Dios edifica una casa espiritual.
